Albany Symphony and Empire State Youth Orchestra present “Symphony Side by Side”

The Albany Symphony and the Empire State Youth Orchestra are set to present “Symphony Side by Side,” a Pops concert and day of music-making collaboration on October 13 at the MVP Arena.

The free event will feature students, singers of all levels, and amateur musicians to rehearse and perform a family-friendly concert, gaining exclusive insight into the professional symphonic process. From blockbuster soundtracks such as Moana and Jurassic Park to classic symphonies, participants will sit side-by-side to perform a wide array of music selections.

Student instrumentalists (elementary, junior, and senior high school, and college) are invited to join the two orchestras for How to Train Your Dragon, Wicked Highlights, and the theme from Spirited Away. Students must RSVP by October 3 and be able to arrive at MVP Arena by 11 a.m. on October 13 for a special students-only rehearsal.

For the first time, singers can join the Side by Side for two sing-along numbers: Moana’s “How Far I’ll Go” and “Ode to Joy.” RSVP by October 10 to join the vocal rehearsal.

The concert will conclude with a grand finale where community members of any skill level (from amateur to professional instrumentalists and singers) are invited to join, celebrating the uniting power of music. Participating audience members will join in for a performance of John Williams’ iconic “Imperial March” and Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” RSVP by October 10 to play in the finale.
