The first-person perspective in shooters usually brings an inherent kind of balance to the constant battle for cover—if you peek your head out to see an opponent, they’ll be able to see you as well. Over the weekend, though, players found the game’s new gesture system had the unintended side effect of breaking this balance, letting players easily and safely see around cover from a third-person perspective.
When you perform a -style gesture in , the camera instantly zooms out to a third-person view with full, free-look control of the camera. The intent is for players to enjoy their own animations from any angle. But the new viewpoint also allows for illicit and completely protected peeking around walls and corners, as can be seen in multiplevideo and photo examples that have been posted online since the game’s launch.
Developer Treyarch is wasting no time in addressing player concerns over the apparently unintended unbalancing. In a statement posted to Reddit Saturday, the company wrote that it is working on an update that will remove the free-look third-person camera from the “competitive” portions of the game.
We’re aware that players have been able to use Gestures (often referred to by the community as “Emotes”) to peek around corners in modes where that can create an unfair advantage. We’re currently working on an update that creates two systems for Gestures – the default system that is in the game now, and a competitive version that disables free look and applies different camera settings to prevent using it to see around corners. The default system will be used in parts of the game where corner peeking won’t affect gameplay balance (like the staging area of Blackout), and the competitive version will be used in modes where a more restrictive camera system is needed. We want players to always have fun with Gestures as intended, but never at the expense of fair gameplay!
Assuming that update is released soon, that quick response is a good sign for the responsiveness and support might receive going forward. We’re still putting the game through its paces here at Ars’ Orbital HQ and should have a full review ready soon.
