Prime Day is nearly upon us, and Amazon has already pushed out a bunch of deals on its own devices. Like Prime Days past, Amazon has discounted most of its devices and services in the hopes that more people will take the plunge and try Echo speakers or other Alexa-enabled devices, Kindle e-readers, Fire TV devices, and more.
As with all Prime Day deals, the discounts are only available to members of Amazon’s Prime service.
Speaking of Fire TVs, Amazon has heavily discounted many of those streaming devices, including the Fire TV Stick and the Fire TV Stick 4K. For Prime Day, the Fire TV Stick with an Alexa Remote for $14.99 (down from $39.99) or a Fire TV Stick 4K with an Alexa Remote for $24.99 (down from $49.99). Fire TV Sticks are the most affordable Alexa-enabled streaming devices from Amazon, but these Prime Day prices are both new lows for the respective devices.
The most obvious difference between the two is video resolution: the Fire TV Stick has a max resolution of 1080p, while the Fire TV Stick 4K supports 4K video as well as HDR10 and Dolby Vision technology. The Fire TV Stick 4K also has an updated quad-core processor so it will have noticeably faster and smoother performance when compared to older Fire TV devices. Otherwise, both streaming sticks have 8GB of RAM, 802.11ac dual-band MIMO Wi-Fi, and Alexa voice command support via the included remote.
Fire tablets are also on sale today. While Amazon’s affordable Fire tablets can’t really match up with higher-end devices like iPads, they are solid media-consumption and Web-browsing tools for kids or those on a strict budget. The best value this time around is likely the Fire HD 8 tablet—a 16GB model (with advertisements) for $49.99, or $30 off its original $79.99 price.
It has an 8-inch HD display, a 1.3Ghz quad-core processor, and a microSD card slot that allows for up to 400GB of storage on the tablet. It also has a 10-hour battery life and is Alexa-enabled, so it can work similarly to an Echo Show in a slimmer, more portable, and more versatile package.
As one could imagine, Amazon discounted nearly all of its Echo smart speakers ahead of Prime Day. If you’ve been on the fence about getting an Echo speaker, this is probably the best time to take the plunge until the holidays. Not only do you save a bunch off of the products’ original prices, but Amazon also has numerous bundles of Echo devices and other devices or services. For example, one current bundle pairs an Echo (2nd gen) with a free six-month subscription to Amazon Music Unlimited for $49.99. You can also save $40 on a bundle that includes an Echo Plus and a Philips Hue White smart bulb.
Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa, comes in handy in both of those bundles: Alexa is integrated heavily with Music Unlimited, and you can control playback with your voice through the Echo Dot. Philips Hue Light Bulbs also integrate with Alexa, and the Echo Plus includes a smart home hub inside of it, so you can pair the smart light bulb to the Echo Plus and immediately control your light with your voice.
Kindles and the rest
The bundling continues with a notable deal on the newest Kindle e-reader. Now you can get the new Kindle (4GB, with ads) plus $5 in eBook credit and three months of Kindle Unlimited for $59.99. Considering the Kindle goes for $89.99 regularly, this is a solid deal that makes our favorite budget e-reader more affordable. Amazon updated the base Kindle not too long ago to include a 6-inch display with newer E-Ink technology, an adjustable front lighting system, Audible integration, and a stellar four-week battery life.
Amazon discounts its Kindle e-readers on occasion, but this is the best price we’ve ever seen on the new Kindle. Admittedly, it’s not as premium as the updated Kindle Paperwhite, but it’s still a good e-reader. The Paperwhite adds a higher density E-Ink display, more storage options, and a waterproof design. But Prime Day hasn’t officially begun yet, so it’s possible that Amazon has more deals for the Kindle category coming over the next two days.
Those are our recommended deals on Amazon devices that are available right now, but there are more beyond that. Aside from the holiday shopping season, Prime Day is generally the best time of year, deal wise, to grab Amazon-made devices and services like Audible.
