Apple reveals special edition Product Red iPhone 8 and 8 Plus smartphones

Red joins gold, silver, and space gray in the color lineup for Apple’s iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Today, the company announced new Product Red special editions of two of its iPhones, both of which will be available for preorder starting tomorrow, April 10, and widely available online and in stores on Friday, April 13.

The Product Red iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have the same specs as regular models, including Apple’s A11 Bionic chip, dual camera setup with Portrait Lighting mode, and wireless charging. But they both now have that signature red case that has appeared on iPhones and other Apple products since 2006.

The new models have a black front panel, a stark contrast to the white front panel found on last year’s Product Red iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models. Apple discontinued the Product Red iPhone 7 and 7 Plus editions when it debuted the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus smartphones last fall.

As with all Product Red edition Apple devices, a portion of the proceeds from the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models will go to the Global Fund to fight HIV and AIDS in Africa and around the world. Apple never discloses the amount donated per sale, but it says it has contributed over $160 million since the program began. Apple will begin taking preorders for the Product Red iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models on April 10, with models starting at $699.
