Apple will unveil its newest devices at an event on Wednesday, September 12, at the Steve Jobs Theater at its Cupertino campus, as confirmed by invites sent to media today. The invite didn’t provide any more details about the event, but it was accompanied by a graphic of a circle with the phrase “Gather Round” underneath it.
This is a September Apple event, so we’ll likely see the company debut the newest iPhones. Apple is said to be announcing a total of three new smartphones: a 6.5-inch handset with an OLED display, glass back, and stainless steel edges; a “more affordable” 6.1-inch model with an LCD display and aluminum edges; and a 5.8-inch model that’s nearly identical to the original iPhone X but with a faster processor and an improved camera.
Reports suggest Apple wants to diversify the iPhone lineup by offering more sizes, colors, and price points. The 6.5-inch model would be the largest iPhone to date, and the 6.1-inch model would be a new, less-expensive model for customers to consider. It’s rumored to come in new colors, too, but which colors those will be remains unknown. Notably, all new iPhone models are expected to have edge-to-edge displays, gesture controls, and FaceID.
We may see other new devices at this event as well. Apple could reveal a new Apple Watch with a larger screen and possibly a better battery life. New iPads in 11- and 12.9-inch sizes may also be on the docket for reveal, and both may forgo the home button for gesture controls and FaceID.
While those have been the most rumored devices ahead of the September event, rumors have also been floating around about an updated MacBook Air and Mac mini. Reports dating back to this spring suggested that Apple may debut an updated-yet-cheaper version of the MacBook Air with slimmer bezels, a better display, and a price tag around or below $999. Mac mini fans should rejoice to see the machine they love get some much-needed love, as the mini hasn’t had a meaningful update since 2014.
Ars will be at Apple’s September event reporting on all the news, so be sure to check back for the latest on September 12. The event begins at 10am PT.
