Stats and the City: How the state stacks up on gun deaths, background checks

In the wake of the mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas, gun control debates are raging again.

Although detailed firearm data tends to be difficult to obtain, in New York state a person is required to pass a background test to obtain a gun license. The data provides context on how the issue has evolved across the state.

How background checks work

New York’s gun background checks are conducted by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which is part of the Federal Investigations Bureau. The checks are intended to verify that the buyer does not have a criminal record or isn’t otherwise ineligible
