City halts plans for Coney Island Creek ferry

The city has temporarily paused its plans to bring NYC Ferry service to Coney Island Creek, after officials said they underestimated the amount of sand migrating into the tidal inlet and the costly dredging needed to mitigate it.

The city’s Economic Development Corp. originally planned to launch ferry service at a new landing near Kaiser Park in 2021, but a state moratorium to protect winter flounder and horseshoe crabs delayed dredging work for six months and pushed the launch date to late this year.
