West African family band Jomion & the Uklos will bring their signature blend of traditional rhythms, reggae, salsa, and jazz to Bolton Landing on Thursday, August 7. Presented by The Sembrich, the group will have two free events at Rogers Park.
Led by Benin-born musician Samuel “Jomion” Gnonlonfoun, the band features his brothers JB and Mathieu, along with his daughter Rose. Together, they create an energetic, danceable sound they call Whedo-jazz, rooted in the musical traditions of their home country, Benin. Known for harvesting joy, movement, and tight musicianship, this band continues to share their culture with new yorker. These qualities have taken them from Lincoln Center Outdoors to Times Square with B.B. King.
The day begins with a free 11:00 AM Children’s Program. It consist of a hands-on percussion workshop introducing young audiences to West African rhythms and instruments. That evening at 7:00 PM, Jomion & the Uklos will close with a free concert for the community at Rogers Park.
