Canine Wedding have released One Cig, a fixating four-track EP that showcases the next bold phase in the band’s evolution.
Canine Wedding is a New York-based three piece indie/folk rock band, featuring members Cam on vocals/guitar, Nick on bass and Cris on drums. One Cig follows Canine Wedding’s standout singles “Just Like Home” and “Racetrack”, which were released last year.
One Cig marks the band’s bold evolution with its seamless blend of rock edginess and fixating folk storytelling through its four tracks, the titular “One Cig”, “I Am Better”, “Call People” and “Stay Inside”.
“One Cig” perfectly encapsulates the indie rock genre with its smooth guitar strums and thrumming drum beats, a track that feels comfortably familiar but somehow unlike anything else ever put forth by the genre.
“I Am Better” leans harder into rock with its cheeky guitar riffs and bolder drumming that stops the song in its tracks at several turns. The lyricism of Canine Wedding shines through in this track that is equal parts hopeful and heart-wrenching. The repeated lyrics “And I will call you when I am better” are vastly relatable without falling into a pit of clichés.
“Call People” is the stand out of the EP, with its gritty guitar and hypnotic bass. The instrumental layering in this track is incredibly impressive; the tried and true rock harshness of each instrument has the potential to become easily overwhelming, but each sound from the vocals to the drums are layered expertly. The song’s overarching message of the emotional cost of avoidance is another relatable concept for all listeners and teases an intriguing social commentary on the impact of easily accessible technology on today’s relationships.
“Stay Inside” brings the One Cig back to earth in all the best ways. It is the most experimental and playful track on the EP, unafraid and boldly daring to fool with several instrumental breaks and unique build-ups to the chorus. The vocals are the frontrunner in this track, with lyrics that are emotionally charged and Cam’s natural rasp breaking clean through the instrumentals.
Following the release, Canine Wedding will take the stage at Brooklyn Music Kitchen on August 8 at 9 p.m.
