Cardi B’s on-again/off-again relationship with Offset has been off for a while, but she’s ready to publicly move on. Amid a contentious divorce that has been ongoing since July 2024, Cardi has hard-launched her new man. Over the weekend, she and NFL player Stefon Diggs made their relationship Instagram official in posts on each of their respective accounts. Who is Diggs, why has he been making headlines for being on a yacht, and how upset is Offset about all of this? Here’s what to know.
Diggs is a 31-year-old wide receiver who signed a three-year deal with the the New England Patriots this March. He’s been playing pro football for about a decade now — the Minnesota Vikings selected him during the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft, and he was later traded to the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Texans. Although his last season with the Texans was cut short due to an ACL injury, a source told ESPN earlier this year that Diggs will be back on the field for the first week of the 2025 season. He looked pretty happy and healthy in those yacht videos from this offseason, so we believe it.
It’s been a relatively slow burn. The pair initially weren’t linked under the best circumstances — in October 2024, DJ Akademiks was one of the first to spread the rumor that Cardi had been texting and “entertaining” Diggs while she was still with Offset. Cardi appeared to deny this alleged affair in an October 9 X Spaces conversation where she brushed off “fucking crazy” online rumors. That December, Cardi confirmed that she was “dating because I’m single” in a tweet telling Offset to “Sign the papers TODAY.” (This was her response to a since-deleted tweet from Offset accusing her of “focus[ing] on dick and tryna make me look bad.”)
TMZ posted footage of Cardi and Diggs pulling up at a hotel in Miami on Valentine’s Day in 2025, but — perhaps unsurprisingly for a woman whose debut studio album is titled Invasion of Privacy — she did not take that as an opportunity to confirm anything about her relationship with him. Cardi was later seen dancing on the NFL star at a club during the first weekend of Coachella on April 13, and then hinted that she was in a relationship in an April 27 X Spaces conversation … though she only identified him at the time as someone “gorgeous” who was “loving [her] from head to toe,” per Billboard. The couple maintained a relatively low profile until May 12, when they showed up to a Knicks game together. They were then photographed at a much-discussed Memorial Day yacht party on May 26. Soon after, the relationship finally made it to their social media accounts.
Diggs included a photo of himself and Cardi court-side at the Knicks game in a May 31 carousel post on Instagram. (The final slide is of a video of Quavo, Offset’s former fellow Migos member, saying, “Wrap it up.”) Cardi hard-launched the next day with a June 1 carousel post that features a shot of her and Diggs cozied up on the yacht, photos of gifts and dozens of flowers presumably sent by him, and a video of her twerking on and looking back at him. “Chapter 5 ……Hello Chapter six,” her caption read.
It’s been speculated (though not confirmed) that Diggs had drugs at that Memorial Day yacht party. He was seen passing a bag containing an unidentified pink, crystallized substance to a group of women in a video that circulated widely on social media and even reached his boss. (“It’s something that we’re aware of. Obviously, we want to make great decisions on and off the field,” New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel told reporters before a May 28 practice, per the Associated Press.)
Three women can also be heard calling Diggs “daddy” in the viral footage. Although Cardi was on the boat, it appears that she was not near Diggs to witness that particular interaction, which an unnamed source later told the Daily Mail that Cardi was upset about. “Girls will throw themselves on him all the time,” the insider said, “but she wishes he wouldn’t be a scumbag and flirt back.” Given that Cardi still posted Diggs on Instagram just a few days later, though, it seems that she didn’t consider whatever happened to be an offense egregious enough to sink their (relation)ship.
Cardi filed to divorce Offset (for the second time) in July 2024 after seven years of marriage, but the contentious split still hasn’t been finalized. She recently expressed a desire in for her ex to “die slow” in an X Spaces conversation on May 30, following a TMZ report that Offset had asked her to pay spousal support. A spokesperson for Offset told The Breakfast Club that this request was because Cardi was allegedly asking for “everything” in the divorce and “barely ever” with their three children. Offset has sought joint custody of the kids, with Cardi’s home staying their primary residence.
Cardi asserted in her May 30 conversation on X Spaces that Offset has always been allowed to be around their kids, yet allegedly “stood [them] up” three times, per People. According to Cardi, Offset has seen their youngest child, who was born in September 2024, “only like five times.” She further claimed that she has asked for “no child support” in a “renewed divorce paper” so that she can “be done with this marriage.”
It depends who you ask. Offset previously insisted in April that the couple doesn’t bother him. “I’m happy for her !!” he wrote on Instagram, per E! News, in response to a comment that theorized that he was likely “punching air” because Cardi had been dancing on Diggs at a club. Meanwhile, Cardi has suggested that Offset has handled their breakup poorly, accusing him of harassment during a March 29 X Spaces conversation. According to People, Cardi alleged that her ex had texted “videos of me and him having sex” to a new boyfriend, left her “explicit voicemails” whenever she went out of town, and FaceTimed her with his girlfriend.
On June 1, the same day Cardi made her relationship with Diggs Instagram official, Offset appeared to suggest that the couple is a publicity stunt by tweeting and deleting, “Good roll out n PR.” He also tweeted a since-deleted gif of a basketball being thrown with the caption, “Today I pass.” Diggs then shared a photo of himself catching a football on his Instagram Story, which some people interpreted as a subtle declaration that he had caught Offset’s pass — and a sign that when it comes to responding to any more shade that his girlfriend’s ex might send his way, Diggs won’t be dropping the ball. To be fair, the football player could also have just been really excited about his sport and the upcoming season. Maybe the real question is whether we’ll see Cardi cheering him on at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts this fall?
