Frank DiLella’s theater picks: ‘Dog Day Afternoon,’ ‘Cats: The Jellicle Ball’ and more

With the many entertainment choices New York City has to offer, it can be difficult to make a choice. Look no further. “On Stage” host Frank DiLella has curated a list of “must-see” shows this week, directing you to the best of Broadway, off-Broadway and beyond.

“Dog Day Afternoon”

The film to stage transfer of “Dog Day Afternoon” is now in previews at The August Wilson Theatre. Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach from “The Bear” make their Broadway debuts in the play, which centers around a botched bank robbery.

Opening night is set for March 30.

“Cats: The Jellicle Ball”

They originally said “Cats” is “now and forever,” and ain’t that the truth.

The musical is back on Broadway like you’ve never seen it before! This bold re-staging of the 1982 Broadway mega-musical invites audiences to “The Jellicle Ball,” inspired by New York City’s underground ballroom culture that emerged within the queer and trans community over five decades ago.

“Cats: The Jellicle Ball” is playing at The Broadhurst Theatre. The opening is set for April 7.

“The Fear of 13”

Heading now to the James Earl Jones Theatre, two-time Academy Award winner Adrien Brody is making his Broadway debut this season — portraying a death row inmate in “The Fear of 13.”

The limited run spotlights flaws in the nation’s prison system.

“Mother Russia”

On the off-Broadway front, over at the Pershing Square Signature Center, check out “Mother Russia.”

This new play by Lauren Yee is set in the early 1990s in St. Petersburg, where we find two friends and a former pop singer with a mysterious past.

The show features New York theater veterans: Steven Boyer, Adam Chanler-Berat, Rebecca Naomi Jones, and David Turner. For tickets, .
