With the many entertainment choices New York City has to offer, it can be difficult to make a choice. Look no further. “On Stage” host Frank DiLella has curated a list of “must-see” shows this week, directing you to the best of Broadway, off-Broadway and beyond.
“Chess”
The highly anticipated revival of “Chess” is back on the boards at The Imperial Theatre — the venue where the show had its short-lived run in 1988. The musical features the powerhouse trio of Tony Award-winner Aaron Tveit alongside Lea Michele and Nicholas Christopher. “Chess” is set against the backdrop of the Cold War and features a score by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice. “Chess” is now in previews. The opening is set for Nov. 16.
“Liberation”
Over at The James Earl Jones Theatre, the women’s liberation movement takes center stage in the off-Broadway to Broadway transfer of “Liberation.” In this new play by Bess Wohl, it’s 1970 and a group of women gather with hopes to change the world. Decades later, one of their daughters tries to figure out where things went wrong. “Liberation” officially opens on Oct. 28.
“Tarrytown”
On the off-Broadway front — just in time for Halloween — don’t miss “Tarrytown,” the musical by Adam Wachter. Set in modern-day upstate New York, the show puts a queer twist on Washington Irving’s spooky classic “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” “Tarrytown” is playing The Cell from Oct. 16 to Oct. 25.
“Blue Moon”
And finally, on the big screen, legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart of Rodgers and Hart fame is in the spotlight in the new film “Blue Moon.” Ethan Hawke plays Hart. “On Stage” caught up with Hawke to talk about transforming his body into the late lyricist, who stood about 5 feet tall.
You can catch Ethan Hawke and company in “Blue Moon,” now playing in movie theaters.
