Frank DiLella’s theater picks: ‘BOOP! The Musical,’ ‘Lights Out: Nat King Cole’ and more

With the many entertainment choices New York City has to offer, it can be difficult to decide what to see. Look no further. “On Stage” host Frank DiLella has curated a list of must-see shows this week, guiding you to the best of Broadway, off-Broadway and beyond. 

“BOOP! The Musical” 

The new Broadway musical “BOOP! The Musical” about the classic cartoon character Betty Boop has been nominated for three Tonys Awards, including a nod for its star Jasmine Amy Rogers and a nom for choreography done by director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell. Rogers and Mitchell to talk the splashy new musical.
 

“Lights Out: Nat King Cole”

On the off-Broadway front, over at New York Theatre Workshop, don’t miss “Lights Out: Nat King Cole.” In this new musical by Colman Domingo and Patricia McGregor, the legendary artist takes center stage on the final night of the Nat King Cole show, and he is torn. Will he step away from the spotlight or go out leaving a lasting mark? Dule Hill stars as Nat King Cole and Daniel J. Watts plays Sammy Davis, Jr.

“Bus Stop”

The William Inge classic “Bus Stop” is about an eclectic group of folks who end up taking refuge in a diner during a snowstorm is now playing at Classic Stage Company. The show is being co-presented by CSC, National Asian American Theatre Company and Transport Group.

“Puppetopia”

And finally, over at Here Arts Center, the puppets are the headliners in “Puppetopia.” Now through June 1, the puppet festival will feature works like “Rhynoceron” and “Variations On (the) Water,” plus the world premiere of “The Harlem Doll Palace.”
