Irish Artisan Finds Joy in Forging Knives

It has been an eventful year for Patrick Brennan.

In May, he opened Patrick Joseph, a shop in the Castle Yard collection of studios and stores in Kilkenny, the heartland of Irish crafts, about a 20-minute drive from his home.

In March, he became a full member of the Knifemakers’ Guild, a select society of about 300 of the world’s top knife smiths. And that same month, he was one of the five Irish artisans selected for the 2023 Craft Awards, presented annually by the Royal Dublin Society.
