Hong Kong’s lush hillsides inform interiors of model apartments by Studio Ella

Interior designer Studio Ella has styled a trio of model apartments inside Hong Kong‘s 33 Kennedy Road development, using earth tones and natural materials that nod to the surrounding landscape.

Located in Hong Kong Island’s affluent Mid-Levels area, 33 Kennedy Road has a total of 71 units.

Studio Ella turned three of these into model homes: a one-bed studio, a two-bed apartment, and a vast three-bed apartment that’s over 1,000 square feet in size.

The forested hills surrounding the development came to play a key part in the studio’s design scheme.

“It is important to us that our projects have a relationship to their context, and we were deeply inspired by the area’s verdant landscapes and rich heritage,” said the studio’s founder, Ella Bridgland.

“Each apartment is thoughtfully designed to frame nature, with furniture and art placement carefully conceived to maximise views and create small moments for pause and contemplation,” she told Dezeen.

“A soft, muted, and earthy colour palette runs throughout, celebrating the beauty and texture of natural materials, which are used in abundance.”

In the studio apartment, a velvety moss-green headboard runs behind the double bed, and pale eucalyptus wood has been used to craft the room’s joinery.

The living area of the two-bed, meanwhile, features a terracotta-red seating booth and a matching marble table.

Natural materials can also be seen in the more subtle decor details of the three-bed apartment.

In the sitting room, for example, there’s a pattern rug crafted out of a natural fibre called abaca that comes from banana trees. On top sits a sectional sofa and an olive-coloured armchair.

In the principal bedroom, a low-lying bookshelf made from walnut veneer runs the length of a picture window.

Metallic elements have been introduced, too – patinated bronze handles have been fitted onto the storage cupboards to add “a sense of unique character and quality that can be felt in the hand”.

A variety of works by local artists have also been hung throughout the apartments.

“With a strong emphasis on championing local talent, we had an idiosyncratic approach to selecting artworks, with the intention that the collection felt like it had been acquired, naturally and organically over time,” Bridgland said.

Developers have long called on designers and architects to curate appealing show apartments for prospective buyers.
