5 cases of omicron variant confirmed in New York

The first cases of Covid-19’s omicron variant were confirmed Thursday night in New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Bill de Blasio announced.

Five New Yorkers have tested positive for the new variant, including at least one person who is vaccinated, the governor and mayor said in a joint briefing Thursday.

The first confirmed case is a 67-year-old woman who lives in Suffolk County and recently returned from South Africa. She tested negative for Covid-19 after returning and subsequently tested positive for the virus on Nov. 30, officials said. Sequencing results reported Thursday found that she was positive for the omicron variant.
