Musicians of Ma’alwyck Celebrates Composer David Amram 95th Birthday

The Capital Region is celebrating an American music legend in November. “David Amram at 95,” a concert by Musicians of Ma’alwyck honors the famous composer, conductor, and musician, David Amram, whose creative talent influenced generations of artists from jazz, classical, and American folk.

Musicians of Ma’alwyck, created in 2000 by violinist Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz, plays chamber music around New York State, bringing history to life. The group is currently celebrating its 25th Anniversary Season. Famous for using musical story with background information. They perform everything from 18th century songs to current performances. The group regularly works with local and foreign artists includes Schwartz, Norman Thibodeau, Sten Isachsen, and André Laurent O’Neil.

This event will take place at SUNY Schenectady’s Carl B. Taylor Auditorium on Friday, November 21 at 7:30 PM. Amram will play with Ma’alwyck musicians and special guest performers. Spectators will also have a close look of David’s skill and understanding with a public lesson, open rehearsals, and a Q&A session.

Lifetime of Harmony

David Amram’s life is similar to a road map of American music, from writing with Leonard Bernstein, Thelonious Monk, and Jack Kerouac to performing with Charlie Parker. Amram is honored for his combination of classic history with diverse beats and a feeling of being creative.

“David’s vitality as a human permeates his music,” said Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz, Ma’alwyck’s founder and Artistic Director. “His energy, joy, and integrity inform every note. His performances are not just concerts, they’re conversations with the soul.”

The Concert Program includes Conversations, a chamber piece that goes from deep to lighthearted, Native American Portraits, combining classical style with native songs and Greenwich Village Projects, a dedication to the bohemian spirit of Manhattan in the 1950s.

Musicians Christopher Brellochs, Andrew Snow, Max Caplan, and Andrew Janack will perform with Amram, in honor of Amram’s 95 years of musical talent. There will be a after show event where guests can meet the honoree and the artists. “David Amram at 95” is more than just a show, it’s a history lesson in sound form. Every piece of work becomes a feeling of friendship, storytelling and passion when Amram is present.
