BRIC Becomes First Music & Arts Organization in CIG

BRIC, Brooklyn’s leading arts and media organization, was just welcomed by New York City’s Cultural Institutions Group (CIG) as a new member of the prestigious coalition. BRIC was one of 5 new organizations honored by Commissioner Laurie Cumbo on September 30, making them the first ever media and arts organization to join CIG in its 125-year history.

With this designation, CIG recognizes BRIC’s role in fostering New York City’s vibrant cultural scene and promises its continued support for BRIC’s mission – highlighting NYC artists and communities while increasing access to the arts. From this point onward, BRIC will receive dedicated funding from the city each year for their operations and programming, increased capacities for capital improvements, and improved opportunities for collaboration with similar institutions.

The CIG, established in 1869, aims to create powerful partnerships between both public and private institutions in New York City. Organizations in their coalition span all avenues of arts and media, from museums and historical societies to performing arts centers and even zoos. Despite their broad scope, expansion has been rare, making this year’s addition of five new organizations especially impactful.

“Joining the CIG is a historic milestone for BRIC. It recognizes us among the institutions that have shaped New York City’s cultural legacy. For Brooklyn, it means greater investment in our creative future. For the City, it brings something new—a media partner grounded in community and innovation.”

-Wes Jackson, BRIC President

BRIC is gearing up to celebrate their 50th anniversary, having served as a groundbreaking media and arts institution since 1979. In the past several decades, their institution has expanded to include an art gallery, concert stage, media classroom, public media producers, civic forum, and most importantly, a home for New York City’s creative communities. They’re most known for their festivals, such as their summer festival BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn and JazzFest, as well as the Emmy-award-winning BRIC TV.

Joining BRIC as new members of the CIG are the Bronx Children’s Museum, Louis Armstrong House Museum, Noble Maritime Collection, and Pregones/PRTT.
