Frank DiLella’s theater picks: ‘Cabaret,’ ‘JOY’ and more

With the many entertainment choices New York City has to offer, it can be difficult to make a choice. Look no further. “On Stage” host Frank DiLella has curated a list of “must-see” shows this week, directing you to the best of Broadway, off-Broadway and beyond.

“Cabaret”

There’s a new Emcee and Sally Bowles at Broadway’s hottest haunt — the Kit Kat Club. Tony Award winner Billy Porter and musical sensation Marisha Wallace are headlining the 2024 revival of Cabaret. The pair reprise the roles they recently played in London’s West End. Cabaret will play its final Broadway performance on Oct. 19.

“JOY: A New True Musical”

Off Broadway, don’t miss Tony Award-nominated actress Betsy Wolfe in JOY: A New True Musical. The show tells the true story of Joy Mangano, a determined working mother who transforms her life by building a business empire — starting with her invention of the Miracle Mop. JOY is now playing at the Laura Pels Theatre.

“Ava: The Secret Conversations”

Elizabeth McGovern of Downton Abbey is stepping into the role of Hollywood Golden Age star Ava Gardner — serving as both actress and playwright in Ava: The Secret Conversations.

“It is. I think it was probably eight or nine years ago now. I just chanced upon a dusty copy of the book by Peter Evans. The transcription of these conversations that Ava Gardner truly had with her biographer in London at the end of her life, trying to write this autobiography with him, I thought, was such an engaging way of exploring personality, life, the movies. I thought all these things would make for a great show,” McGovern said in an interview with On Stage.

Ava: The Secret Conversations begins performances at New York City Center on July 29.
