Homer Center for the Arts will celebrate the legacy of the Band on Saturday, June 28 with a book discussion and a musical performance featuring members of The Band and Levon Helm Band.
Located in Cortland County, Homer Center for the Arts will start the celebration at 1 p.m. with a discussion centered around the book Levon Helm: Rock, Roll & Ramble—The Inside Story of the Man, the Music and the Midnight Ramble. The discussion is free to attend.
The late Levon Helm, one of the five founding members of The Band, was the drummer, vocalist and mandolin player of the group. The Band, known for songs like “Up On Cripple Creek,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and “The Weight,” were a roots-rock ensemble from the 60s and 70s.
Following the discussion, The Weight Band, led by Woodstock musician Jim Weider, former member of The Band and Levon Helm Band will perform Band favorites and original music at 8 p.m.
The Weight Band also features Brian Mitchell of the Levon Helm Band and Matt Zeiner on keyboards; Michael Bram, who performs with Jason Mraz, on drums; and bass player Albert Rogers, who has shared stages with Levon Helm and Garth Hudson in The Jim Weider Band.
