FreeWill raises $30M to help people leave something behind for charity

In the U.S. less than half of adults have a will dictating how they would like their money and assets to be handled after their death.

FreeWill, a startup based in Lower Manhattan, is hoping to boost that number through free online estate planning tools—while also helping nonprofits raise more money. The company on Wednesday announced a $30 million Series B investment from Bain Capital’s Double Impact fund to grow that business.

The startup, founded in 2017, has about 150 employees supporting a dual business structure. There is the consumer-facing side, which offers free software for estate planning. But its main revenue source is partnerships with nonprofits, which
