By the numbers: Restaurants, retailers and recreation firms start 2022 on the back foot

Billions of dollars of federal funding was not enough to jumpstart the city’s restaurant, retail and recreation industries and sustain a robust recovery, according to a report released this week by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.  

The three sectors, once stalwarts in a city that exceled at gathering lots of people in common spaces, account for four in 10 of the jobs lost in the city during the pandemic. They now employ 169,700 fewer workers than they did two years ago.
