As the Year of the Tiger begins, New York City’s East Asian businesses and communities are mounting celebrations and offering specials in the hope that this lunar new year will mark the beginning of the end of a tough time.
“It’s centered around the idea of a fresh start,” said Joanne Kwong, president of Pearl River Mart, a Chinese-owned retail stalwart with locations in Soho and Chelsea Market.
“For a lot of small-business owners, 2021 might have been better than 2020,” she said, “and we are hoping that 2022 is better than both combined.”
