Turning local wares into online sales

You can get almost anything you want in New York City—but you can’t always buy it online.

As e-commerce orders skyrocket, helped along by the promise of safety and convenience during the pandemic closures, brick-and-mortar retailers have searched for tools to keep their own sales up. Nationwide, e-commerce spending more than doubled in the past decade and now accounts for $214.6 billion annually, even as high rents and taxes challenge standalone retailers.

Into the mix comes ShopIN.nyc, a nearly two-year-old company that aims to help small businesses make an online play by allowing them to get their local inventory to local customers via the act of clicking “buy.”
