The cupcake comeback will be digital

Nearly two decades after a cupcake craze that turned the sweets into a must-have dessert and prime tourist attraction, Magnolia Bakery, the bakery behind the boom, is expanding once again. That’s thanks to a new owner, RSE Ventures, a venture capital firm co-founded by developer Stephen Ross.

The bakery’s eighth city location opened in Hudson Yards in late January, marking the end of a year-long push for more brick-and-mortar locations in New York City. Next up: the start of a focus on digital, direct-to-consumer sales with both local pickup and nationwide shipping.
