Michael Garner became the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s first chief diversity officer more than a decade ago. At the time, the MTA ranked dead-last among 97 state agencies and authorities in dollars paid to minority-owned, woman-owned and disadvantaged business enterprises (MWDBEs) in contracts. In his first year on the job, that equated to a 6% inclusion rate.
Based on the latest metrics, the MTA is ranked first, with 31% MWDBE inclusion.
“For the first time last year, we exceeded the governor’s 30% goal,” Garner said.
