Mayor appoints senior adviser Eric Ulrich to lead Department of Buildings

Mayor Eric Adams has selected Eric Ulrich, a former city councilman from Queens and a current senior adviser in his administration, as the new commissioner of the Department of Buildings.

The selection of Ulrich, a moderate Republican, puts a City Hall veteran at the wheel of a crucial agency. He served for 12 years on the City Council, where he represented neighborhoods including Ozone Park, Lindenwood, Howard Beach and Woodhaven in Queens. Ulrich grew up in Ozone Park and resides in Rockaway Park. 

The Department of Buildings enforces the building codes and zoning regulations of more than 1.1 million buildings and affects various aspects of the construction trades
