Lopsided elections leave us with winners who've made only vague commitments

If there is not a great saying about how elections showcase the conversations we have about democracy, then someone should come up with one quickly. Our society has been rollicking from one affliction to another: protests and violent demonstrations, a viral pandemic, fatal police encounters, sexual coercion at work and dangerous doubt over secure and reliable elections.

When we elect representatives to govern, we hand them influence over these ills. But we, as voters, should not be required to release that power—to cede our voices to the elected officials in the rooms—without having an excellent idea of where they stand.
