Late push for women-only jail complicates Queens’ Rikers Island replacement

​​A group of Albany lawmakers is pushing Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams to reopen the Lincoln Correctional Facility on the Upper West Side so females incarcerated at Rikers Island can have a separate jail.

The initiative comes as the city is building four borough-based jails by 2027 to replace the Rikers Island prison complex.

The Queens replacement jail site—one of four along with Chinatown in Manhattan, Mott Haven in the Bronx and Downtown Brooklyn—is to house both male and female inmates.
