Judge denies landlords' effort to block eviction moratorium

A federal judge has denied an effort by small city landlords to throw out New York’s eviction moratorium, describing their arguments as “not only chimerical, but disingenuous.”

The Rent Stabilization Association and a handful of small property owners initially filed the lawsuit in New York Eastern District Court in May, when the state’s eviction moratorium was set to expire on Aug. 31. The landlords called the ban “downright unconscionable” and aimed to have the courts declare it unconstitutional.

The parties then filed an amended complaint on Oct. 15, after the state extended its eviction moratorium to Jan. 15. The RSA and landlords asked the court for a preliminary
