IRS Refunds Will Start in May for $10,200 Unemployment Tax Break

The American Rescue Plan waived federal tax on up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits, per person, collected in 2020. President Joe Biden signed the $1.9 trillion Covid relief bill on March 11, after many people eligible for the tax cut had already filed their tax returns. The IRS will issue refunds automatically to these taxpayers starting in May, the agency said Wednesday. Those payments will continue into the summer.
