Inadvertent party at the Met

A ploy to entice more locals to the Metropolitan Museum of Art has become a surprisingly popular weekend event.

Attendance at Friday and Saturday evening “Date Nights,” at the Upper East Side institution have climbed past pre-pandemic levels, as New Yorkers take advantage of the Met’s cavernous spaces to socialize and mingle, as well as enjoy the art.

Between 5 and 9 p.m. on those two evenings, the museum is hosting between 3,000 and 4,000 visitors—about 40% more than those who came during those times before the pandemic.
