On Tuesday morning, Dr. Jennifer Lighter received an email from her child’s school that said masks were now optional.
“I wasn’t very upset; my kids have been fully vaccinated against Covid,” said Lighter, an infectious disease specialist and hospital epidemiologist at NYU Langone Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital. While some schools and establishments had a short-lived run with ditching masks due to the recent legal challenge to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s indoor mask mandate, an outcome that makes that injunction permanent could hamper recovery efforts from the omicron wave, she said.
