City Council, Adams agree to give Fair Fares more funds

The City Council and the Adams administration agreed to allocate $75 million in funding to Fair Fares, a program that subsidizes half-price transit tickets for New Yorkers living near the poverty line.

Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and multiple committee chairs had demanded Mayor Eric Adams earmark baseline funding in his upcoming Fiscal Year 2023 preliminary budget, which is scheduled to be published Wednesday. Fair Fares was originally funded at $103 million in 2020, but its purse was reduced to $53 million during a pandemic budget crunch.

The $75 million agreement between the speaker and mayor is the first time the city has guaranteed baseline funding for Fair Fares.
