Brooklyn startup BlocPower raises $30M from Microsoft in mission to ‘turn buildings into Teslas’

Donnel Baird‘s Twitter handle states his company’s purpose: Turn buildings into Teslas.

That is to say, turn gas-powered buildings into much greener, electric-powered ones. Baird’s Brooklyn-based startup, BlocPower, has done that in about 1,200 residential buildings during its seven years in business, supplying solar panels, heat pumps and insulation upgrades to mostly older building stock in neighborhoods with high levels of poverty. The company on Friday announced that Microsoft would back its mission with a $30 million debt investment.

The loan funding from Microsoft comes through the tech giant’s $1 billion Climate Innovation Fund. The $30 million will tack on to a $50 million loan facility that BlocPower
