The pandemic now serves as a time marker for many people, but for The Goldberg Sisters, it became a turning point, from seeking the energy of city life to noticing the small intricacies of Hudson Valley. With the latest single “The Great Resignation,” the project reflects a shift in personal desire toward simplicity and a reexamination of what fulfillment could look like.
Between July 2020 and July 2021, more than 1.2 million people left the nation’s urban centers, including Adam Goldberg, who relocated from Los Angeles to Upstate New York. With the release of his warm psych-rock track, listeners gain a glimpse into Goldberg’s post-pandemic realizations.
The pandemic marks an era of unease, a time a which isolation reshaped how people saw their lives. Vocals from Abigail and Lily Chapin of The Chapin Sisters lend the track a vintage American tone, evoking a period when the world felt simpler, mirroring the slower pace of Upstate New York. The song operates in a transitional manner, one in which a nostalgic vision of America meets emerging realities.

The accompanying music video visually places viewers through dreamlike spaces, a hazy reflection of memory and experience. The pace and natural imagery emphasize stillness and routine as well as reinforce the song’s themes of contrasting societal expectation from urban life to suburbia.
“The Great Resignation” appears on When the Ships of My Dreams Return releasing on February 20, Goldberg’s first album since 2018’s Home: A Nice Place to Visit. The album moves through a wide range of psych-pop textures while anchoring itself in themes about modern shifts in perspective.
