New York Voices Bring Special Performance to Binghamton’s Anderson Center

Binghamton’s Anderson Center for the Performing Arts is bringing a special performance from acclaimed vocal jazz ensemble the New York Voices to their stage on October 5 at 3:00 p.m.

Not only will attendees witness the talents of the New York Voices, but they’ll also get to see them share the stage with several other talented vocalists in the Binghamton area: Binghamton University music and theatre students, local high school vocalists, and the Southern Tier Singers’ Ensemble will join them for an unforgettable performance next Sunday.

The New York Voices got their start at Ithaca College in the mid-1980s when members Peter Eldridge, Kim Nazarian and Darmon Meader found each other through the school’s vocal jazz ensemble. Soon enough, the trio were making music together, catching the eyes of record labels with their vocal prowess, jazz expertise, and widespread appeal. They signed with GRP Records in 1989 and soon after added Lauren Kinhan, completing their now-iconic quartet.

In the four decades since the group’s conception, they’ve released 10 critically acclaimed albums, worked with major names in jazz, such as the Count Basie Orchestra, Paquito D’Rivera and the Bob Mintzer Big Band, and passed their knowledge on to the next generation through their annual Vocal Jazz Camps.

Members of all three programs accompanying the New York Voices are overjoyed to be sharing the stage with them. Dr. William Culverhouse, Director of Choral Activities for the Binghamton University Department of Music, says, “The New York Voices have been pioneers in vocal jazz throughout their entire careers, and their artistry has really served to define the genre. To have the chance both to learn from them and to sing with them on the concert stage is nothing other than a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” Vestal Senior High School Vocal Music Teacher Austin Kiley shares in Culverhouse’s enthusiasm, calling this show a “testament” to the collaborative nature of the Southern Tier’s “robust choral community.”

“Bringing together these small and committed subgroups of singers from the high school, collegiate, and semi-professional levels to learn from and perform beside pillars of the vocal jazz world is truly special.”

– Austin Kiley, Vestal Senior High School Vocal Music Teacher

Unfortunately, the group plans to retire at the end of 2026. In these final shows, they hope to go out on a high note, and with this show especially, they want to help pass the torch to the next generation of vocal jazz stars.
