All You Need Is George Celebrates George Harrison’s Birthday at Temple Theater

On Wednesday, February 25, Temple Theater in Rochester was ripe with anticipation, as friends embraced like it was a large, extended family reunion with infectious joy. Everyone is here to see All You Need is George, a tribute to not only the music of, but the life of George Harrison. With a slideshow that made the crowd feel attached to George himself, pictures of the early days with The Beatles all the way through his entire career appeared in a fitting time, given it was George Harrison’s birthday, and what a way to celebrate one of the brightest of musicians.

All You Need is George took no time to jump into the tunes and mood, the band comprised of Jackie Greene, Steve Kimock, Berry Duane Oakley and Gil Assayas. They kicked off the music and everyone took their seats immediately with a few dancers through the seated sections swinging and moving to the hits laid out before them.

The night started with a slow, playful assortment of George Harrisons’ discography from his time in All Things Must Pass, The Beatles, Traveling Wilburys’ and his solo work, and there was a lot to go through as Harrison’s music has spanned decades and many major bands. What is best described as a jam-band approach mixed with classic Harrison hits lead the listeners down a path of note-by-note perfection of classics mixed in with a flavor of their own adding a compilation of solos from most members of the band and keeping the pace right up until intermission. The crowd made their way to get drinks and talk between friends, and they were buzzing about what they were hearing, “I am so glad they played…” was repeated over and over, as well as “they are playing perfectly, such a great night for this,” was heard on multiple occasions.

With intermission over, it was time to get back in the swing of things, and the crowd could feel it too. People were dancing and singing along as All You Need is George hit the chords and started playing “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles receiving a standing ovation from members of the crowd along with deafening applause, and it was well deserved with the level of musical talent on the stage. The vibe was the same in the balcony section, sing-a-longs breaking out and people leaving their seats to get up and groove a little themselves. A great time was had by all, if you have not seen All You Need is George, you need to, one of those musical tributes that need to be seen at least once.
