Ulysse Nardin’s Blast Free Wheel Marquetry Watch Reveals Silicon As Art

Ulysse Nardin’s newest timepiece, the Blast Free Wheel Marquetry, uses silicon as a material in both highly technical and artistic applications.

The Swiss watch brand pioneered the use of silicon for escapement wheels with its first Freak timepiece in 2001. The new Blast Free Wheel Marquetry is every bit as freaky as the Freak. The feature of this collection of timepieces unveiled in 2018 is that many of the movement’s parts appear as separate components above the dial, moving as if they are independent of one another. This includes the movement’s wheels, tourbillon with the proprietary Ulysse Anchor Constant Escapement, barrel and power reserve display.
