Women Challenging the Machine: Elizabeth Holtzman, Shirley Chisholm, and Bella Abzug

That ’70s show: On August 22, 1974, three congresswomen from New York (Elizabeth Holtzman, third from left, Bella Abzug, second from right, and Shirley Chisholm, far right) looked on as President Gerald Ford signed a proclamation declaring August 26 Women’s Equality Day. The text read, in part, “As 1975 approaches, widely proclaimed as International Women’s Year, Americans must deal with those inequities that still linger as barriers to the full participation of women in our Nation’s life.
