Oscar Isaac plays Victor Frankenstein
Victor Frankenstein is a depressed dreamer whose obsessive attempts to crack immortality and create life from death backfire.
Maybe you know Isaac best as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, or devoured him as Moon Knight on Disney+. Maybe you’re a freak for gloomy science fiction films like Ex Machina, Dune, and Annihilation. Maybe you’re just gloomy, and can’t get enough of Inside Llewyn Davis. Maybe you’ve seen him on stage! There’s a documentary about him playing Hamlet coming out later this year, if that Shakespeare play is of interest to you for *cough* any reason. Finally, let’s not forget the limited series Scenes from a Marriage, and his Golden Globe win for Show Me A Hero.

Jacob Elordi plays the Creature
Often misidentified as “Frankenstein” himself, the Creature was created by Victor from a handful of deceased individuals. Together, they create a new being entirely who goes on his own journey of self-discovery and enlightenment… and, yes, a little violence.
Best known for Euphoria and The Kissing Booth films, Elordi has since starred as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, and as the posh, magnetic Felix in Emerald Fennell’s controversial Saltburn. He and Fennell are going to have people talking next year with Wuthering Heights… gird your loins!

Mia Goth plays Elizabeth & Claire Frankenstein

In the book, Elizabeth is Victor’s childhood friend and eventual love interest. In this new film, she is Victor’s younger brother William’s fiancé… and eventual love interest. Messy! She also loves bugs! (The actress additionally plays Victor and William’s late mother; which on a Freudian level is only a little bit concerning.)
Goth has really risen through the ranks as one of the best modern Scream Queens (though, in MaXXXine, Pearl, and X she’s often the one making people scream) working today. A collab with gothic aficionado Guillermo del Toro seemed inevitable. You’ve also seen her in Luca Guadagnino’s witchy Suspiria, the disturbing psychological horror film A Cure for Wellness, and the not-so-scary 2020 film Emma. as the titular Jane Austen heroine’s pet project.
Christoph Waltz plays Henrich Harlander

Herr Harlander, Victor’s rich benefactor who has his own motives for wanting to revive the dead, is an invention of the film.
Waltz is a two-time Academy Award winner for Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained. He won those back to back! Waltz also played a Bond villain in Spectre and No Time To Die. Recently he joined Only Murders in the Building.

Felix Kammerer plays William Frankenstein

Victor’s younger brother got a few more hugs as a child that kind of made all the difference. William is in Shelley’s book, but is aged up considerably in this film. The character seems to have been combined, a bit, with Victor’s bestie Henry Clerval.
Kammerer starred in the 2022 adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front and the mini-series All The Light We Cannot See. It’s nice that he doesn’t have to go to war in Frankenstein.

Charles Dance plays Leopold Frankenstein

Frankenstein’s father is a real piece of work. He’s abusive and values science over human life. One might say that Victor tries a little too hard to veer in the opposite direction.
Modern audiences know Dance as another abusive father, Tywin Lannister, on Game of Thrones. He was also on two seasons of The Crown and the min-series Bleak House. His film credits include Gosford Park and The Imitation Game.

David Bradley plays the Blind Man

The creature befriends a Blind Man in the woods who shows him kindness and teaches him how to read. So sweet!
You definitely know Bradley as Argus Filch from the Harry Potter movies. He also played Walder Frey, one of Arya’s most satisfying victims, on Game of Thrones. That’s two GOT baddies (but not the fun kind) in one film! He’s worked with Guillermo del Toro before as well, primarily as a voice actor in Pinocchio and the live action Netflix series about vampires called The Strain.
Lauren Collins plays Hunter’s Wife
The Blind Man lives with a family in the woods. The hunter, his wife, and their young daughter are thankful when what they think is a “Spirit of the Forest” starts doing good deeds on their land.
Her role in the film is relatively small, but I wanted to bring this cast member up in case any millennials recognized her and couldn’t figure out why. Collins is a working Canadian actress who played Paige Michalchuk on Degrassi: The Next Generation for over 100 episodes. Her other credits include Life with Derek and Kroll Show.

Lars Mikkelsen plays Captain Anderson

Victor Frankenstein (and the creature) meet a ship’s captain on an icy sea and tell him his tale while recovering from injuries. The captain is goal-oriented to the point of obsession, much like a certain mad scientist…
Mikkelsen played significant roles on House of Cards, The Witcher, and The Killing. He plays the live screen version of the blue Star Wars villain Grand Admiral Thrawn on Ahsoka and starred in a series called Ride Upon the Storm. Yes, you’ve probably seen his brother Mads as a villain in something too.
Ralph Ineson plays Professor Krempe

Krempe is one of Frankenstein’s teachers at school who, you’re not going to believe this, doesn’t approve of Victor’s research. He is one of the professors mentioned in Mary Shelley’s book, though that storyline goes a little differently in the original story.
Ineson most recently brought, in the words of Iman Vellani, “big hungry boy” Galactus to screen in The Fantastic Four: The First Steps. The BAFTA nominee, for voice work on Final Fantasy IV (king????), is also known for The Witch, The Green Knight, and the HBO series Chernobyl.
