Police have launched an investigation in the Bronx after a cop was injured in a shooting involving a teen robbery suspect on Thursday night, authorities said.
The incident unfolded inside an apartment building at 1015 East Gun Hill Road, near Paulding Avenue, in Williamsbridge at about 10:20 p.m. on Oct. 9. after cops tracked an 18-year-old gunman to the complex.
NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, said that the teen, who sources familiar with the case have identified as Antonio Morales, allegedly robbed his mother and brother at gunpoint before fleeing.
“Approximately 9:16pm, officers from the 49 Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic robbery at 791, Van nest Avenue. The male caller stated that his son had robbed his mother and older brother at gunpoint. When the officers responded to the scene, the father said he believed the suspect, his son, was now located at 1015, East Gun Hill Road and in possession of a firearm,” Chief Rivera said. “Officers and the father then went to that address and established a perimeter around the residence.”

When police knocked on the door and tried to make contact with the perpetrator, the person inside calmed to not have any knowledge of Morales. However, his father told the cops that he recognized his son’s voice on the other side of the door. Officers called for backup and attempted to keep Morales inside when they heard three gunshots.
Law enforcement sources told amNewYork that they believe Morales attempted to shoot out the window in order to make a getaway. When that did not work, he then allegedly attempted to bust his way out of the door. The impact sent a sergeant hurtling backward and falling to the ground, stuffing a severe head injury.
“An officer then discharged her firearm, striking the perpetrator twice, once in the lower back and once in the right arm. Officers recovered a loaded firearm in a bag on his person,” Chief Rivera said. “The officer who sustained a serious head injury was immediately rushed to Jacobi Medical Center. Thankfully, he is currently in stable condition. The perpetrator was also brought to Jacobi Medical Center and is in critical condition.”

Residents of the East Gun Hill Road location said the building, which is mainly comprised of affordable housing units, has been relatively quiet, although domestic disputes have been reported on occasion.
“It’s very alarming to see something like this go down inside the building,” said one resident, Josiah Bermudez.
Chief Rivera reported that Morales has a “significant violent criminal history” but did not go into specifics. Sources with knowledge of Morales’ rap sheet say he has previously been arrested six times, including with a firearm history and domestic assault, and even more serious charges.
This police shooting is being investigated by the Force Investigation Division.
