Artist sells painted violins, jackets at the Met Opera

Looking at a picture of one of the stars in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Medea, Rafael Colon is creating one-of-a-kind jackets available for purchase at the Met’s gift shop at Lincoln Center.

“I taught myself how to draw, how to paint, so my free hand is really just looking,” Colon said.

Besides denim jackets, he is also known for that same style, but on skateboards and violins. His daughter helped him dive into art, he said.

“It was my daughter’s idea,” he recalled. “She wanted a pair of sneakers with drawings on it.”
