On March 26 and 27, Facades+ returns to New York City to deliver an outstanding program for the largest event of the year. Materiality is the theme of the first day’s symposium, which will feature a day of roundtables with co-chair BIG, StructureCraft, TYLin, Terreform ONE, Wildflower LTD, and others. A day of interactive workshops on March 27 will provide the opportunity to learn about material selection and custom software in facade development, among other topics. The event will take place at the Metropolitan Pavilion, where our Methods + Materials Gallery will feature 48 exhibiting building product companies.

Keynote: Materialism
Kai-Uwe Bergmann, partner at BIG; and AN’s editor-in-chief Jack Murphy, will kick off Facades+ New York City’s day-long program. Bergmann and Murphy will begin the day’s thematic focus by weighing the virtues of materials past, present, and future and considering how they appear to us today.
Concrete Futures: Advancements, Prospects, and Carbon Innovation
The first featured material of the day is a familiar one: concrete. Innovations in durability, adaptability, and fabrication techniques have made concrete a contender for next generation buildings. Ken Miller, principal at Reg Hough Associates; Adam I Gordon, managing partner at Wildflower; Julian Ocampo, senior director at ICON; and Tracey Coffin, technical director at BIG will discuss ways in which concrete as a material can continue to improve, and how its applications can be expanded.

Wood for Good: Mass Timber’s Evolving Role in Design and Construction
Mass timber has garnered positive press for its use in high-profile design projects and is top of mind in discussions centering sustainable design and carbon-conscious construction. Peter MacKeith, Lucas Epp, Amy Harrington, and Jason Wu, four leaders in mass timber design and engineering, will discuss strategies for the material’s widespread implementation. The growth of regional material supply chains, building typologies which could benefit from timber construction, and innovations in material production will be central topics in this roundtable.

Biophilic Design: Expanding Nature
Too often, biophilic design is thought of as integrating nature into construction, rather than integrating construction into nature. In the program’s concluding roundtable of the day, four experts in the world of biophilic design—Mitchell Joachim, cofounder of Terreform ONE, Julia Watson, founder of Lo—TEK, Joyce Hwang, professor at University at Buffalo SUNY, and Einat Lubliner, senior urban and architectural designer at BIG—will consider how to integrate biological and ecological thinking into site analysis, how to construct spaces that serve both human and non-human residents, and what materials can be used to further this design philosophy.
A Day of Workshops: Four Tracks for Future Facades
On March 27, four workshop tracks with leaders in the AEC industry will be offered: Energy, Sustainability, and Resiliency (Track A), In the Details: Facade Design, Engineering + Project Delivery (Track B), Multimaterial Facades in Practice (Track C), and Technology, Research, and Development Tools (Track D). Design and technical experts from Studio NYL, Perkins&Will, TYLin, Arup, RAMSA, Pelli Clarke & Partners, RDH Building Science, Walter P. Moore, and more will lead the workshop sessions.
