The city’s School Construction Authority has exercised an option to demolish a grocery store near New York University, after waiting more than a decade until just before this month’s deadline.
The sudden move leaves him scrambling, grocery store owner Avi Kaner said.
The authority wants to build a public school for special-needs students on the site of 130 Bleecker St., where Kaner has operated a Morton Williams supermarket for more than 20 years.
In May, Kaner signed a lease renewal with NYU. He said that if he had known the SCA was planning to exercise its option, he would have negotiated to relocate to the still-undeveloped 181
