New York City’s HIV rates achieved a new milestone, according to city data released Dec. 1 to coincide with World AIDS Day.
Health providers and those specializing in people living with HIV noted challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic to ensure care was not disrupted. And access challenges for such patients lie ahead, they said.
The number of people newly diagnosed with HIV last year fell 21% to 1,396. The number has fallen 76% since 2011. Black people remained disproportionately affected by the disease, representing 47% of new infections last year—a share that has grown steadily since 2015, when it was 41%.
