‘Tear the BQE down!’ Construction leaders entertain leveling aging roadway

One of the city’s infrastructure heavyweights called for the demolition of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway at an Industry City early morning gathering, and neither the acting chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority nor the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce president seemed fazed by the idea.

“Tear the BQE down!” said Carlo Scissura, president and CEO of the New York Building Congress, a trade group of more than 250,000 members. “It’s dangerous, polluted, rusted. This is the moment to do something right. Let’s start with the project that affects the most people and the most communities.”
