'Revolution Rent' follows musical's historic journey to Cuba

NEW YORK — The musical “Rent” blazed a new trail on Broadway when it opened in 1996 and now a film is documenting another historic chapter for the groundbreaking show.

“Revolution Rent” was conceived and created by Andy Señor, Jr., an alum of Jonathan Larson’s “Rent.” Señor made history in 2015 when he brought the rock opera to Cuba, marking the first American Broadway musical to be performed in the country in more than 50 years.

“It was really frustrating,” said Señor of the process. “You had to teach the art form because they had never done a musical before.”
