James Levine, Who Ruled Over Met Opera, Dead at Age 77

For decades, James Levine was the musical heartbeat of the Metropolitan Opera, before his spectacular fall from grace amid a sexual misconduct scandal.

It’s the great opera singers who normally rise to fame, but for more than 45 years, Maestro James Levine was revered as the artistic leader of the Metropolitan Opera.

Levine conducted more than 2,500 performances during his time at the Met, which began when he was just 28. He also held prestigious posts with other opera companies in the U.S. and Europe.
