St. John Label GOOD DUCK Records Partner With NY Nonprofit Music Masters Collective

GOOD DUCK Records announced a partnership with New York-based nonprofit Music Masters Collective. The St. John-based label will release a compilation album titled RAFT UP on Thursday, Feb. 27.

The 16-track record features cuts from The Addis Revolution, St. John Electric (Allen Clapp & Jill Pries from the Orange Peels), Terre Roche, Moss Henry, PuZL, Mother Goat and more.

Launched in late 2024, GOOD DUCK has released a half-dozen albums and a steady stream of singles, racking up reviews and features from Latitudes & Attitudes, CBS Boston, Magnet and Country Music People. The label received its first GRAMMY nomination with an official ballot nod for The Addis Revolution in the Best Reggae Album category.

St. John artists Jared Warren and Allen Clapp co-founded the artist-driven, community-led record label after Clapp’s Coral Star Studio tracked over 150 songs by nearly 20 different artists since opening in 2022. Those artists needed support bridging the gap from recording to release.

Warren emphasized the groundswell of energy once music started coming out of the studio. Musicians would come backstage after gigs wanting to discuss lifting each other up and using their success to pull up fellow artists, with GOOD DUCK serving as the vehicle for that movement. His relationship with Music Masters Collective spans over 20 years, noting their dual focus on live productions rather than recorded music.

The Caribbean island of St. John spans just 20 square miles, with more than half designated as uninhabited National Park. Despite having no airport and no traffic lights, the island has developed a thriving music scene. RAFT UP offers a guided tour through the island’s eclectic sounds, including punk-calypso, jam-band rock, reggae, Caribbean country, indie-rock, prog rock and bar-band rock ‘n’ roll

Music Masters Collective, based in the Catskills, produces interactive live music experiences and educational curriculum for musicians and music lovers of all backgrounds and skill levels. Founded in 2019 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the organization hosts week-long music camps at Full Moon Resort featuring world-class artists, master classes, workshops and collaborative jam sessions.

Clapp, who relocated to St. John from Northern California’s Redwoods in 2021, found his development of GOOD DUCK and baptism into the island’s music scene totally unexpected. He explained he always wanted a classic, 1960s-’70s-style record label that was eclectic and wild, with rock, folk, country and reggae all sharing a stage.

The label’s roster ranges from a youth steel pan orchestra to seasoned reggae artists, space rock jam bands, burgeoning country artists and teen pop performers.
